Legal Advisor

Job description

The Legal Advisor is responsible for providing legal aid services, including legal information on obtaining documentation or retrieving lost documents, legal counseling and legal assistance, as well for organizing and conduct awareness raising sessions on legal related issues. The Legal Advisor will be part of, and closely cooperate with, the Protection Mobile Team composed of one Psychologist, two Social Workers and one Case Worker. In particular, the legal advisor is responsible for:

  • Disseminate information on legal related issues to beneficiaries;
  • Legal counseling to beneficiaries;
  • Organize and conduct awareness raising sessions on legal related issues in the areas of operation and according to identified needs;
  • Refer beneficiaries to other specialized protection service providers, including other members of the Protection Mobile team when needed through established referral pathways and follow up;
  • Keep and store accurately paper records and files of clients;
  • Collect and store information about services and activities implemented by the mobile team;
  • Participate in coordinated protection needs assessments in target areas;
  • Together with Protection Mobile Team members, develop weekly schedules for outreach activities with indication of areas of intervention.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

  • Advanced university degree in law;
  • Minimum two years of relevant professional experience as a lawyer
  • Excellent knowledge of the Iraqi legal system and legal procedures;
  • Strong knowledge of international protection and human rights legal standards;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently;
  • Excellent spoken and written Arabic;
  • Good computer skills;
  • A high respect to client/organization confidentiality;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and respect for people with special needs;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural context as a flexible and respectful team player;
  • Experience in emergencies and conflict areas;
  • Familiarity with standards and guidelines for legal protection programming and coordination;
  • Excellent ability to speak and write reports in English;
  • Flexibility and ability to cope with stressful situations;
  • Previous working experience with IDPs, refugees and returnees.
