Health and hygiene promotor/medical assistant

Job description

  • Work closely with all members of the mobile health team
  • Conduct health education and sensitization sessions, ensure follow up of these sessions, their quality and efficiency
  • Be respectful to the patients and their relatives
  • Treat all patients equally with respect in regards to ethical and confidential issues
  1. Specific responsibilities

1 – Plan information, education and communication sessions for target populations

  • Participate in the initial needs assessment at target communities’ level: facilitation of focus group discussions, visits to sites, and meeting with key members of community.
  • Compile basic information about health and hygiene messaging and create the necessary materials and way of communication to sensitize populations on these issues
  • Compile information about the Iraqi health system and access to health to sensitize population on their rights and services available
  • Ensure messaging is appropriate and targeted towards IDPs living in unfinished buildings and informal shelters, giving them the necessary and pertinent information to build their capacity to maintain their own health status
  • Ensure the hygiene promotion activities are based on SPHERE standards

2 – Conduct information, education and communication sessions for target populations

  • Organize and animate community members to discuss about these issues and actively participate to sensitization sessions
  • Conduct health sensitization sessions alongside the Mobile Medical Unit
  • Ensure the link between PU-AMI and the target community, listening to their feedback regarding PU-AMIs work and acting on it as well as informing the PM
  • Ensure community participation in sensitization sessions, identify community volunteers to ensure community mobilization on WASH-related issues
  • Ensure tools and messages are in line with PU-AMI and DoH policy and guidelines

3 – Data collection and Reporting

  • Collect data about sensitization sessions conducted and forward to theAME Officer for compilation
  • Report on a weekly basis to the Project Manager
  • Analyze the data with the PM and take lessons to feed back into future planning (type of messaging, way of conducting sessions etc.)
  • Record accurately for each area, on a timely manner, the patient registration data
  • Collect the general information about the IDPs’ living conditions to contribute to daily site report

4 – Collaboration with MMU team

  • Communicate on a regular basis with the MMU team to share issues or specific concerns
  • Participate regularly in team meetings in order to maintain up to date the team’s collective knowledge about the IDPs’ situation in terms of health and hygiene knowledge and needs
  • Use medical team’s data and experience to adapt and make appropriate the sensitization messaging.

5- Organization

  • Participate in the preparation of the material, equipment and drugs for the Health Team
  • Report to the PM any problem in the clinic especially the gap/loss/robbery/damage of medical equipment or medicines or any patient and organizational issue
  • Ensure appropriate set up and organization of the MHT and the site
  • Ensure doctors and nurses have sufficient non-medical materials to conduct consultations

6- Patient care

  • Be the first point of contact for patients attending the MHT, record registration data and provide patients with information they require
  • Ensure a good level of communication and understanding between the MHT team and the beneficiaries- ensure understanding of the functioning of the MHT, that patients know where to go and what to expect
  • Assist the doctor and nurses during certain health care acts if necessary
  • Follow the waste management according to the waste management procedures

7- Other duties

  • Participate in the team meetings
  • Be aware of the security rules and social and political situation in the field at any time and provide feedback to the health program manager
  • Participation in hygiene kit distribution, with Log Assistant, and post-distribution monitoring

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

  • Nursing diploma or relevant diploma
  • 2 + years experience working as a nurse (community, general, public health) or relevant experience  
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills
  • Excecllent organisational skills
  • IT skills
  • Fluent in English and Arabic
